The incremental security template is primarily used to relax the security settings imposed by the baseline security template to allow additional services on the servers to run. An incremental template is developed for each server role so that only the neces sary services and settings are applied to each server.

After you have identified server roles on your network, you might find that several of them can be placed into a similar category for example, file servers and print servers. Follow these guidelines to decide when to group server roles:

Group server roles when doing so will not compromise the security of either computer. Because grouping server roles might enable more services on some computers than is necessary for their function, this weakens the security on these servers. However, the risk might be acceptable depending on the environ ment in which the server runs. In highly sensitive environments, do not group server roles. For example, do not group server roles when implementing DNS services to the Internet on a file server for internal documents. Do not group server roles unless there is some common ground. For example, do not group database servers with network infrastructure servers. The administrators of the database server will likely require a greater amount of trust from the organization than those of the network infrastructure server because of the value of the information in the databases. Often, you can group the following server roles:

Because nonlocal GPOs are applied hierarchically, the user or computer s configura tion is a result of GPOs applied to its site, domain, and OU. Group Policy settings are applied in the following order: 1. Local GPO. Each computer running Windows Server 2003 has exactly one GPO stored locally. 2. Site GPOs. Any GPOs that have been linked to the site are applied next. GPO application is synchronous; the administrator specifies the order of GPOs linked to a site. 3. Domain GPOs. Multiple domain-linked GPOs are applied synchronously; the administrator specifies the order of GPOs linked to a domain. 4. OU GPOs. GPOs linked to the OU highest in the Active Directory hierarchy are applied first, followed by GPOs linked to its child OU, and so on. Finally, the GPOs linked to the OU that contains the user or computer are applied. At the level of each OU in the Active Directory hierarchy, one, many, or no GPOs can be linked. If several group policies are linked to an OU, then they are applied syn chronously in an order specified by the administrator. This order means that the local GPO is applied first, and GPOs linked to the OU of which the computer or user is a direct member are applied last, overwriting the earlier GPOs. For example, you set up a domain GPO to allow any user to log on interac tively. However, an OU GPO, set up for the domain controller, prevents everyone from logging on except for certain administrative groups.
