Read the security template setting and the choices presented. Choices might be to simply enable or disable, or they might be more explicit. Use resources to determine what the setting will do. Sometimes it will be self evi dent, such as the setting that states the minimum length for a password. Other set tings might seem vague or might just need to be researched. Use your own knowledge and other resources to determine the impact a specific setting might have when combined with other settings. Determine whether the setting can restrict, lock down, or eliminate something and therefore make a server more secure. Determine whether the setting restricts, locks down, or eliminates something that might cause the server to not run. Determine whether the setting adheres to or violates your organization s security policy. Consider each setting in the template, and make a decision about whether changes are needed to make servers more secure or whether secure baseline set tings should be reinforced by including them in the template.

Note Although some settings are user interface settings for example, the background bitmap or the ability to use the Run command on the Start menu they can be applied to com puters using settings in the Computer Configuration node.

Both the Computer Configuration and the User Configuration nodes include settings for installing software, settings for installing and accessing the Windows Server 2003 operating system, and registry settings. These settings are contained in the Software Settings, Windows Settings, and Administrative Templates nodes.

In both the Computer Configuration and the User Configuration nodes, the Software Settings node (shown in Figure 10-2) contains only the Software Installation extension by default. The Software Installation extension helps you specify how applications are installed and maintained within your organization. It also provides a place for indepen dent software vendors to add settings. When you configure settings in the Software Installation extension, you can manage an application within a GPO that, in turn, is associated with an Active Directory site, domain, or OU. Applications can be managed in one of two modes: assigned or pub lished. You assign an application to a computer when you want computers or users managed by the GPO to have the application. You publish an application when you

Although anonymous is not in this group in Windows Server 2003, Guest account and groups are. A user right to adjust memory available to a process. In the wrong hands, it can cause a denial of service attack, as too much memory is used by a single process and none or little is available for others. The guide recommends High Security restrict this right to Administrators, NETWORK SERVICE, LOCAL SERVICE. Comments This is a good place to restrict access to only those who need it, depending on computer role. Use the High Security recommendation, and make other deci sions in the incremental templates. Restricting access further here might cause problems, especially if few server roles really need restrictions.
