The baseline template includes a large number of settings, and many of them cannot be simply made into yes or no decisions. You must ensure that modifications to the template follow security policy; however, you might find it difficult to make decisions about all the setting opportunities just by using your security policy. Luckily, there are other resources you can use to make these decisions. Many organizations have documented their opinions about how security templates might be configured. They even make available copies of their recommended Win dows security templates that you can download and use. To create a specific desktop configuration for users, you create GPOs, which are col lections of Group Policy settings. Each computer running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 has one local GPO and can, in addition, be subject to any number of nonlocal (Active Directory based) GPOs.

The Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Security Guide is available from Microsoft. You can download the templates and a document of almost 300 pages that speci fies how they fit into the process of securing Windows servers. The Microsoft guide, Threats and Countermeasures, available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx displaylang= en& f amilyid=1b6acf93-147a-4481-9346-f93a4081eea8, provides a detailed explanation of all settings. It is designed as a companion guide to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Security Guide .

One local GPO is stored on each computer whether or not the computer is part of an Active Directory environment or a networked environment. A local GPO affects only the computer on which it is stored. However, because the local GPO settings can be overridden by nonlocal GPOs, the local GPO is the least influential if the computer is in an Active Directory environment. In a non-networked environment (or in a networked environment lacking a Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 domain controller), the local GPO s settings are more important because they are not overridden by nonlocal GPOs. By default, only nodes under Security Settings are configured for local GPOs; settings in other parts of a local GPO s namespace are not enabled or disabled. The local GPO is stored in %Systemroot%\System32\GroupPolicy.

Although convenient and resistant to developer error, container-managed concurrency does not cover the full breadth of concerns that multithreaded code must address. In these cases the specification makes available the full power of the Java language s concurrent tools by offering a bean-managed concurrency mode. This scenario opens the gates to full multithreaded access to the singleton bean, and it is the onus of the bean provider to manually apply the synchronized and volatile keywords to safeguard the bean instance in support of parallel invocations.

Nonlocal GPOs are created in Active Directory and must be linked to a site, domain, or OU in order to be applied to either users or computers. To use nonlocal GPOs, you must have a Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 domain controller installed. By default, when Active Directory directory service is set up, two nonlocal GPOs are created:

Default Domain Policy This GPO is linked to the domain, and it affects all users and computers in the domain (including computers that are domain control lers) through Group Policy inheritance. For more information, refer to the section on Group Policy inheritance later in this lesson. Default Domain Controllers Policy This GPO is linked to the Domain Controllers OU, and it generally affects only domain controllers, because computer accounts for domain controllers are kept exclusively in the Domain Controllers OU.

The National Security Agency offers a several-hundred-page guide and templates that address security in Windows 2000. The Microsoft Windows 2000 Security Operations Guide provides documenta tion, recommendations, and templates for Windows 2000. Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine, which you can view at www.mcpmag.com, provides a conference CD-ROM and attack analysis, as well as a discussion on how the Windows Security Conference held in July 2002 built a secure network using Microsoft Windows 2000 templates provided in the Win dows Security Operations Guide. The network was presented on the Internet, attacks were invited, and none were successful.

The life of a singleton bean is very similar to that of the stateless session bean; it is either not yet instantiated or ready to service requests. In general, it is up to the Container to determine when to create the underlying bean instance, though this must be available before the first invocation is executed. Once made, the singleton bean instance lives in memory for the life of the application and is shared among all requests.
